Choosing the Right Support Team

Practical tips for interviewing providers, checking credentials, and building a team that respects your preferences and culture.

The right support team feels respectful, reliable, and aligned with how you want to live. Start by listing non-negotiables: communication style, cultural considerations, scheduling needs, and any specific skills or training you require.

Ask providers how they match staff to participants, how they handle roster changes, and what happens if a regular worker is unavailable. Consistency can make a big difference to trust and routine.

Verify registrations, insurance, and screening where applicable. For direct support roles, relevant qualifications and experience in disability or mental health may be important depending on your plan.

Trial periods and open feedback loops help. A good provider welcomes your input and adjusts when something is not working. You can change providers if your needs are not being met—your plan is there to serve you.
